Our Ophthalmology service is at the forefront of veterinary eye care, offering advanced treatments and compassionate service in a supportive and collaborative environment.

The Ralph is the UK’s largest independent (non-corporate, non-university) multidisciplinary specialist referral centre in southeast England (Marlow, Buckinghamshire, near London). #TeamRalph comprises ~260 talented and compassionate Ralphers who work together to deliver exceptional care and support to our patients and their families.

ROLES ON OFFER:

We have the following full-time or part-time permanent nursing opportunities in our Ophthalmology team:

~ Senior Ophthalmology Nurse

~ Ophthalmology Nurse

~ Ophthalmology Nurse Intern

Please note: Prior experience in Ophthalmology nursing is preferred but not essential. We will provide all the necessary training to allow you to flourish in this unique and wonderful discipline!

You will work alongside veterinary specialists, specialists-in-training, other nurses and patient care assistants. Our caseload is plentiful and varied. We highly support professional development and growth. We encourage active participation in ongoing education and training to maintain and improve skills and knowledge.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Senior Nurse:

~ Play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of our Ophthalmology service.

~ Work closely with the Head of Service, the Nurse & Patient Care Assistant (PCA)  Team Manager and our team of Senior Nurses.

~ Assist in the development and implementation of protocols and procedures.

~ Monitor and manage inventory of ophthalmic equipment and supplies.

~ Create and manage rota schedules for the Ophthalmology nursing team.

~ Provide support and mentorship to nurse interns, RVN’s, and PCA’s.

~ Deliver training sessions to enhance the skills of the nursing team.

Nurse:

~ Play a vital role in providing surgical and medical management for various ocular diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis and much more.

~ Support and prepare patients for surgeries and other procedures, including gonioscopy, ocular ultrasound, and electroretinography.

~ Prioritise patient care with a compassionate and patient-centred approach.

~ Help collaborate with other teams to ensure we catch ocular diseases or injuries early for optimal outcomes.

~ Communicate effectively with patients’ caregivers and other disciplines to ensure comprehensive patient management.

Nurse Intern:

We also want to hear from less experienced nurses interested in a Service-Specific Nurse Internship in Ophthalmology. This internship will last for six months. You will receive full training, support, and mentorship from within the service, overseen by our Nurse & PCA Training Coordinators. By the end of your internship, you will have the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform referral-level nursing. We guarantee you a permanent position in Team Eyes at the end of the six months. This guarantee is subject to satisfactory performance.

WORKING PATTERNS:

Senior Nurse/Nurse:

~ Full-time is forty hours per week, comprising four ten-hour shifts, including a one-hour paid lunch break per shift.

~ You will be on-call for the Ophthalmology service one weekend every five weeks and as part of a shared Bank Holiday rota.

~ All our Senior Nurses also participate in a weekend and Bank Holiday rota, providing clinical support (typically remotely) to the hospital.

Nurse Intern:

~ Full-time is forty hours per week, most likely comprising five eight-hour shifts, including a one-hour paid lunch break per shift.

~ There are no on-call requirements initially. This may change over the course of the internship, depending on your progress.

Marlow is located on the River Thames between Henley and Windsor. This is a beautiful area with lovely walks, water-based activities, and more. Our hospital is just off the A404, easily accessible from the M4 and M40 motorways, and close to London.

Requirements

  • RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)
  • Eligible to work in the United Kingdom
  • English speaker (native, bilingual, professional)

Benefits

  • Senior Nurse Salary: £35,500-40,000, subject to experience and further relevant qualifications.
  • Nurse (Non-Internship) Salary: £30,000-35,500, subject to experience and further relevant qualifications.
  • Internship Salary: During internship: £26,500. First six months in the permanent role: £30,000; After that: £32,000, £34,000 and, in time, £35,500.
