Introducing…Our Internal Medicine Service!

As we continue on the tour of our services, the next stop is Internal Medicine and the wonderful Magda.

Internal medicine investigates conditions which are uncommon, complicated or difficult to diagnose and treat. These conditions can be broad and may affect one or more organs.

This includes a wide range of conditions:

  • Vomiting, diarrhoea or weight loss
  • Metabolic conditions such as diabetes
  • Hormonal conditions such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism
  • Breathing-related disorders (for example affecting the lungs or the nose)
  • Bloodstream or blood clotting disorders such as anaemia or unexplained bleeding
  • Bone marrow problems
  • Cancer
  • Infectious diseases
  • …and more.

It can be an upsetting and frustrating time when your pet isn’t well and the cause is not entirely clear. Our aim is to ensure all animals are happy, well, and the best they can be. Our highly-trained clinicians and nurses, and our advanced equipment (e.g. CT scanning, endoscopy), will support us to achieve this. Once a diagnosis is made, we work closely with our other clinical services to provide the best possible care and treatment for your beloved pet. It is common for animals that have undergone diagnostic tests and treatments to stay in the hospital for a day or more.

Our Internal Medicine service is available for consultations for urgent and less urgent clinical cases. We are very happy to discuss cases, and specific problems, with referring vets.

Making it all possible…

Magda Gerou-Ferriani

Magda will lead our Internal Medicine service and is incredibly passionate about providing the best possible care for patients, and their carers. Magda also wants to provide a collaborative service, as she works closely with referring practices, and with our other services within The Ralph.

Magda graduated from the University of Bologna in 2002 and then undertook specialist training in Internal Medicine from 2004-2009. Over this period she obtained a Certificate in Small Animal Medicine (Cert SAM, RCVS 2008) and became a Board-certified Diplomate (Dip ECVIM-Ca) in 2011. Magda is a recognised European and RCVS Specialist in Internal Medicine.

Magda has worked both in private practice (as Head of Department in two referral-only services in Northern Italy between 2010-2016 and 2018) and as a Senior Lecturer in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA  (2016-2017). Magda was an Honorary Lecturer in Veterinary Internal Medicine at the University of Liverpool (2012-2018). She continues to support students as she teaches and is involved with examinations for the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice with the University of Liverpool and the General Practitioner’s Certificate of the European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies. Magda has been extensively involved with post-graduate teaching of interns and residents over the years, and has been invited several times to lecture at international and national congresses. She has published original studies in international peer-reviewed journals.

Magda enjoys all aspects of veterinary internal medicine, and has a specialist interest in feline medicine, haematology, gastroenterology, endocrinology and all endoscopic procedures. In the past two years Magda has developed expertise in interventional radiology and endoscopy and has undergone specialist training in the USA in order to be able to perform these procedures.

Magda lives locally with her husband, Simone and her two children, Emma and Frankie. They have a rescue toy poodle called Diva, and two (very cheeky!) rescue cats called Noel and Ike.

Magda’s favourite quote is:

“Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion”

Magda’s work will be supported by our nurses and by the other services provided at The Ralph; together they will ensure our patients are well cared for.

Update May 2020: Magda left Team Ralph to pursue her passions and we wish her all the very best.

Thanks for stopping by and reading about our Internal Medicine service.  Stay tuned for the next instalment – which service will be featured next?!

Take care,

The Ralph Team
