With increasing awareness of the importance of mental health in the veterinary community, terms such as “compassion fatigue” and “burnout” have almost become buzzwords in recent years.
While these issues are important, very real and affect many veterinary professionals, there are reasons for these experiences that are still less explored.
Vicarious Trauma, sometimes known as “secondary stress”, is a known phenomenon in many fields, especially those in which people are caring for others. Examples may include feeling very distressed after seeing an accident happen in front of you, or becoming over-involved with a patient’s family after a difficult euthanasia.
It is by feeling empathy that we connect with others and do our jobs well, but the flip side of this is that we can end up vicariously harmed if we are not aware of this risk.
In this webinar, Katie Gray MNCPS (Acc) RVN, Hospital Counsellor at The Ralph, will explore vicarious traumatisation, including:
- The ways it affects veterinary professionals
- How we might recognise the signs in ourselves and others
- The ways in which we can start to combat these effects and do what we can to avoid it
